We would like to thank EVERYONE who helped make that day possible and helped us raise a grand total of £1,254.32 21-SEPT-2006 Woodleigh Coach House is now a Family run business! The owner of the Coach House is Ms Michelle Vardy. Helping run the place is her partner; Steve Gibbs, two daughters; Sharee and Donna, son; Daniel and Son-in-law Barry Horn. Having taken a trip to Devon, Michelle stumbled across Woodleigh Coach House & Cafe by fluke whilst looking for properties to buy in the area. Before moving, the family lived in North London and Cambridge, coming together to help build the Coach House up and help it achieve it's potential. Now here, the family have dreams and plans for the Coach House including planning for weddings, parties and to try and make this small beautiful building a destination hot spot. History Woodleigh Coach House is a Grade II listed building built between 1896 and 1898 by a London Brewer, the once owner of Woodleigh Hall and all the area then known as Woodleigh. It was used to house the stagecoaches and provide stables and haylofts for horses which would have travelled on the main route from London to Exeter and Penzance and brought beer to store and distribute around Devon and Cornwall. The building is constructed from local snecked Drewsteignton stone with granite dressings and chamfered granite quoins. The Café is situated in the East Wing in what were the stables, the open arched doorways now being windows. Above the Café was the hayloft, which has now been converted into accommodation. The centre of the building was where the stage coaches were stored; the large round headed coach house doorway evident of this. Internally the building was professionally refurbished and rebuilt during the period January to September 2005 to include provision of en-suite accommodation on the first and second floors, some rooms with spectacular views over surrounding countryside. |
